Echoes of the Past

Part five
by Judy Peacock

Marion quietly joined the circle as Robin and Little John were forced to kneel before the leader. Two of the druids melted back into the circle as the other two stood behind Robin and John.

The druid leader looked down at them. The glowing eyes pierced into their own. His words seemed to form in their minds instead of being spoken.

"Because you have intruded you will become part of our sacrifice. But not by dying . . . your bodies will become hosts for two of our dead."

The two druids behind them pulled back their hoods to reveal skulls instead of human faces Their eyes glowed an unearthly green.  The eyes of the rams head scepter in the leaders hand began to glow green as well.

Marion covered her mouth with one hand to keep from screaming, while she reached for her sword with her other hand.

Robin tried to turn his head to see what was going on but only succeeded in moving his eyes. He could see Little John off to his right and watched as a skeletal hand was placed on top of his head. Green light shot out of the scepter and enveloped John and the druid skeleton. John's mouth went slack and his eyes glazed over as the group renewed their chanting.

"No!" screamed Robin and willed himself to move, but to no avail.

Tuck, who still watching from his hiding place, grabbed his cross, closed his eyes, and began to silently pray.

Marion watched in horror, too stunned to move. Without realizing it, a small moan escaped her lips.  The leaders head snapped up and he stared right at her. Without his concentration the green light faded and John slumped forward into the grass.  The druid skeleton collapsed in a heap of cloth and dried bones.  The leader roared.

"We have another intruder! Get her!" He said pointing at Marion and the druids around her began to move towards her.
