Chapter Two
"I'm not dead Xander, I do have feelings," Anya panted, as they quickly moved down the dark streets of Sunnydale.
Biting back his reply, Xander quickened his pace. "God, I don't know why I fell in love with you in the first place," Anya hissed.
Xander was thankful that she was behind him. She was unable to see the pain in his eyes, being this close to her.
"Of course it might have been the great sex. I have to admit, of all the demons I went to bed with, at least you didn't try to rip my head off when we climaxed. Always hated that," she whispered.
"Damn!" Xander cursed.
"You hate that too?"
"I agree, it's a bummer to lose your head, but I think they would love to give it a try." Xander pointed ahead. Anya gulped loud, when she saw three bringers standing in front of them.
"I think we can take two, but I'm not sure about three," Xander whispered.
"I've found, since I've become human that the best defense is running. Yes, it has my vote."
"I second it," Xander said. As they turned to run, Anya let out a moan. "It's a bringer party, and I guess we're the guests of honor," she sighed. Two more bringers, stood blocking their exit. Their eyes sewed shut, they swayed where they stood.
"You know, I wonder how they can get around so quickly with their eyes sewed shut like that. Do you miss television!" she called out.
"Not the time to get social with them Anya," Xander sung out. He frantically searched for a way to escape the First Evils followers. Suddenly he saw one of them being flung in the air. They let out a cry, as each one was being attacked.
"What the hell is going on?" Xander shouted.
"I don’t know, but we're winning."
They watched as one by one the bringers were slaughtered. In seconds, the five bringers were lying dead on the pavement. Xander moved closer to Anya, prepared to protect her from whatever demon just defeated five of the First Evils acolytes. Suddenly he heard a jingling sound.
"Oh my god!" Anya shouted. "Evan, is that you?"
Xander saw the outline of a man suddenly began to appear, in seconds a tall, dark haired man stood before him. He twirled a very sharp, and deadly looking jackknife in his fingers.
"Anyanka! It's good to see you," Evan said. She quickly rushed to him they both embraced. Xander slowly walked up to the couple. Breaking the hug, Anya let out a relieved sigh. "I was never so happy to see you Evan."
"You look great Anyanka, wot 'as it been, fifty years? I 'ave to say, luv the new do."
"Thanks," Anya blushed. She twirled a lock of hair in her fingers.
"Who's this?" Both Xander and Evan said.
"This is my ex-fiancée," she replied.
"I know what I am, but who is he?" Xander said.
"My answer was for the both of you," Anya said. Her eyes grew wide in joy, as she saw a look of jealously flow across the eyes of both men.
"I 'eard you tried being 'uman again," Evan said. "I warned you it wouldn't suit you." He slowly stepped up to Xander. "Doesn't look special to me."
"I'll show you who's special!" Xander growled. Anya flung herself between them. "Xander don't!" she warned him. "He could filet you before you even realized it happened."
Twirling his jackknife, a cocky grin creased Evan's lips. "Come on Anyanka, let me 'ave some fun with 'im. Since 'es a member of the Anyanka-ex-club I promise it won't take long."
"No Evan," she gently said. "Promise me you won't hurt him."
Giving her a wink he said, "Don't worry luv, I give you me word."
"Thanks," she sighed in relief.
"How good is he?" Xander whispered to Anya.
"I met him just after he finished slaughtering an entire battalion in France."
"A whole battalion?" Xander whispered.
"Wasn't nothin' compared to wot Anyanka's done," Evan softly said.
"Oh please Evan," Anya blushed. "You always knew what to say."
"As much as I'm not enjoying this little reunion, we still need to find Buffy," Xander said.
"Oui! Is that the slayer? I can 'elp you find 'er," Evan said.
"Can he do it?" Xander asked Anya.
"He's an assassin demon Xander. He can track any man, woman or beast on land, water, or in the air," she proudly declared.
"You always know's wot to say luv," Evan said. "Let's be off, and be careful. Them Shrunken 'ead wannabes are everywhere."
Taking the lead, Evan led them down the streets.
"You sure we can trust him," Xander asked Anya.
"As long as you're not the one he's being paid to kill, you're as safe as the gold in Fort Knox."
"Don't remind me luv," Evan called back. "I'm still tryin' to figure out 'ow to get in there."
Xander couldn’t erase the glow he saw in Anya's eyes when she first saw Evan. He tried to shake off the pangs of jealously that threatened to grow in his heart. After all, he was over her, he thought…wasn't he?

Spike raced through the streets, the only sound was his boots pounding on the pavement. He searched street after street, hoping to get to Buffy before Evan found her. Hearing a scream, he sprinted down a dark alley. At the end, he found Buffy and Giles with their backs to them, two of the slayers in training was busy trying to kill a vampire.
"Hold the stake tighter," Giles shouted. "And don't forget to aim for the heart."
One of the girls let out a scream of delight when she managed to plunge her stake into the Vampire, unfortunately the Vampire did not puff away into a pile of dust.
"Nice try girly," the vampire hissed, as he began to pull the stake out.
"Or dear," Giles sighed. "Occasionally we do get a Vampire whose heart is on the right side."
Buffy rushed towards the girl. The vampire held her in a tight grip, "Want to know how it feels to get this plunged into your chest?"
"No thank you, I think you'll do just fine," Buffy said. Glancing up the Vampire saw the slayer coming at him. He tried to release the girl, but she was so frightened, she had a death grip on him.
"Let me go!" he roared. Buffy was on him in a heartbeat. He tried to block her killing blow with his arm. He still held the stake in his hand. Jumping up, Buffy kicked the stake; it plunged directly into his right side. He immediately puffed away into a pile of dust. The Slayer in training that he held plopped down on the pavement.
"You all right?" Buffy asked her, as she helped her up.
"I…I'm fine," she stuttered.
"Buffy!" Spike called to her. She saw him running down the alley. From the look on his face, she knew that trouble was not far behind.
"What's wrong?" she said.
She saw Spike searching behind her, then down the alley. "Spike, tell me, is it Xander?"
"We have to get you to a safer place," he told her.
"Is it the First Evil?" Giles asked him.
"No, it's somethin' more deadlier…Evan."
"My god, you mean the assassin demon I've read about? Don't tell me he's been hired to kill Buffy."
"Assassin demon?" Buffy said. "Is that a bad thing?"
"Very bad," Spike said, as he grabbed Buffy's right arm.
"Extremely bad," Giles chorused him, as he grabbed her other arm.
"Guys, I've killed hundreds of demons. What's one little demon going to do to me?" Buffy said.
"Did you ever hear about Custards last stand?" Giles said.
"You mean that was…?"
"Evan," Spike said. "He told me he did that one for free, said Custard kept him up with his snoring one night."
"Let's go," Buffy said. Pulling herself out of their grip, she took the lead. "Kennedy, can I trust you to take the others back to the house? I don't want you to be pulled into the backwash."
"Sure Buffy, we'll hurry home."
"Use the main streets, once you get home, Willow will be there to protect you."
Kennedy ushered three of the girls down the street. Buffy made sure to go the opposite way, Spike quickly moved to walk by her side. His senses were tuned into searching for the unseen assassin. As they were walking past a closed mini-mall, Buffy let out a curse, "This just isn't our night guys."
Before them stood ten vampires. "What do you suppose they want?" Giles said.
"Spike!" a bald headed vampire shouted.
"Benjy, I thought you'd be fertilizing a rose bush by now," Spike shouted back.
"Old friends?" Buffy asked him.
"Used to be, until I left them in a greenhouse."
"That's not such a bad thing."
"They were unconscious at the time. They woke up after the sun rose."
"Oh," Buffy softly said.
"We are going to kick your ass!" a Hispanic Vampire growled.
"I'm going to have a snack of that skinny broad," a purple haired vampire purred. He quickly stepped up to where Buffy was standing.
"I am not skinny," Buffy said, with a frown. She gazed up at the Vampire, making a fist, the vampire let out a chuckle. "Oh look, she's going to try and hit me with her wittle hand. Go ahead girly, give it your best shot." He stuck his chin out. Spike and Giles took a step back. They saw the angry look in her eyes. They began to pity the vampires. Pulling her arm back, she said, "The names not girly, it's Buffy."
"Spike, you deserve to be killed, hanging around a girl named Buffy!" a black vampire tried to say, between giggles.
"That's my real name, I do have a professional one." She threw her fist forward, hitting the Vampire square on the jaw. He flew in the air, to land on two of his startled companions. "It's Slayer, be sure to remember that."
"The Slayer!" the black Vampire hissed.
Grabbing Buffy's arm, Spike spun around, releasing her, she flew in the air. Somersaulting, she landed in the midst of the Vampires. "Hi guys, want to see how this skinny board can make some dust bunnies?"
She kicked high with her foot, slamming it into the chest of the black Vampire. He stumbled back, hitting one of his companions. They all began to fall back. "Come on guys," Buffy said. "Give me something to work with."
They slowly began to circle her, "Wait for it guys," Benjy said.
Spike suddenly realized that something was wrong. He searched down the street. He saw Anya and Xander rushing towards them, he also saw something that made his blood freeze. Evan was sprinting ahead of them, in an instant he dissapeared.
"He's here!" Spike shouted, as he ran towards Buffy. He saw the vampires ring part, allowing Evan a chance to get to Buffy. Using a parked car, he ran up it, and leaped off the roof. He sailed in the air, his eyes focused on the area ahead of Buffy. He looked for any sign of where Evan was. Blocking out the noise around him, he concentrated on one sound that would tell him how close Evan was. Then he heard it, the jingling of his jackknife.
He then saw something flying out of nowhere. "Buffy, get back!" he shouted, as he landed in front of her, just before the object reached her. The Vampires scattered as Spike fell to the ground. He clutched his chest, letting out a moan of agony.
"What the hell took you so long?" Benjy shouted to Evan. He slowly appeared in front of Spike.
"The jobs done," Evan said. "You got nothin' to complain about."
Buffy squatted next to Spike, she saw a small dart protruding from his chest. She quickly pulled it out. Once Spike saw it, he slowly closed his eyes.
"Buffy wasn't your mark," he sighed. "It was me all along."
